The Toowoomba Mountaineers men’s basketball team will play their first preseason game for 2018 against Commonwealth Games competitors Cameroon in Warwick this Thursday 22 March.
Cameroon accepted the invitation of the Southern Downs Regional Council to set up their basketball training camp in Warwick prior to the Commonwealth Games and the Toowoomba Mountaineers are delighted to provide a practice match for the visitors.
Mountaineers Head Coach, Danny Morseu, said playing a national side is a great opportunity for the team and he’s keen to see how they perform.
“It will definitely be a challenging match, but I have full faith in the team if they stick to the game plan,” Morseu said.
“It’s a great experience to play a national team and I believe we will come away having learnt a lot and being better prepared for the season ahead.”
However, it’s been a disrupted start to the 2018 campaign for the Mountaineers.
After the loss of star recruit Demetrius Perkins due to injury, Morseu has also had to contend with loss of another one of his seven-foot players Mitchell Davis due to work commitments.
“It was disappointing because he is a great player and has trained with us from the start, but unfortunately work commitments mean Mitch won’t be able to continue with the team.” Morseu said.
However, he said he has confidence with his team and has scouted replacements for the losses who are all ready to play.
Harold Ridgeway, Josh Derksen and Mayo Manylok will come in as the big players and all have huge potential.
Morseu says he is also expecting to see great things from guards Jason Ebeneter, Damon Bozeman and Toowoomba local Cameron Weber as they are already adding great value to the team.
Morseu expressed how eager the team is to play their first match after practicing for the last 7 weeks in preparation for the 2018 QBL season to start in April.
“The team is excited, they can’t wait to get out on the court and implement the strategies we’ve been working on over the last 7 weeks,” Morseu said.
“This should be a great hit out and we can’t wait to show them what we’re made of.”
The match is set to take place at 6:30pm on Thursday 22 March at WIRAC, 29 Palmerin Street, Warwick.
