The Townsville Flames are excited to announce the newest addition to the 2017 roster with the signing of up & coming JCU Townsville Fire star Darcee Garbin. Currently playing through a break out season with the Fire, Garbin will bring much needed size and post presence to the Flames roster for the 2017 QBL season.
Garbin will join the Flames for the 2017 season on the back of her most successful and consistent WNBL campaign where she is currently averaging 7.5ppg and 4.7rpg as the team looks to complete a trifecta of titles. Currently playing a key bench role for the Fire behind WNBL superstar Suzy Batkovic, Garbin will be expected to step up for the Flames in a starting role as a focal point of what promises to be one of the most talented rosters in the QBL.
Townsville Basketball General Manager, Greg Vanderjagt expressed his excitement at the addition of Garbin ahead of the upcoming season.
“Darcee has proven through her productivity this WNBL season that she is going to be a very good player at the QBL level for us this season. Her ability to not only control the paint, but also step out and shoot the ball is a real asset to the team we are putting together”
“We identified at the end of 2016 the need to add size and rebounding to our roster for this year and Darcee ticks both of those boxes for us. She is going to change the way we play and how teams are going to be able to match-up against the Flames this year. Straight away we get one of the 3 best post players in the QBL along with Tami Willey (Mackay) and Shanavia Dowdell (Rockhampton)”.
Garbin shared her pleasure about staying in Townsville during the WNBL offseason for the first time, citing the support around the program as a key factor in her decision.
“I’m already staying here for WNBL next season, so it makes sense to stay in Townsville and work on my game with the coaches and support staff around the Flames and Fire programs this year. Making the Australian World University games team is a big goal of mine this year and I know being here in Townsville is the best way to help me prepare to do that”
“I’m looking forward to having some down time after a big WNBL season, then getting straight back into it with the Flames girls, ready for the start of the QBL season”.
The Flames will kick off their 2017 QBL season in Cairns on Friday April 28th in a blockbuster north conference match-up. Season tickets for all Flames home games will go on sale on Monday 27th February.
