The Frenchville Sports Club Cyclones are pleased to announce the return of championship winning player Shanavia Dowdell for the upcoming 2017 Queensland Basketball League season.
Shanavia will return for her 4th season with the Cyclones after completing another highly successful season with her Belgium team which from all indications means taking them to finals.
Dowdell’s professional playing career is extraordinary having played in many of the top leagues in the world. This includes two seasons in the WNBA, France and the Australian WNBL, as well as fitting in three seasons with the Cyclones.
Shanavia has a remarkable list of Australian awards including WNBL All-Star five, QBL All-Star five, and QBL MVP indicating the quality player she is.
Dowdell is always excited about returning to Rocky. “The Rockhampton community and my team-mates always make is so comfortable to play here. The Rocky fans on game night, well they make it even better”.
With Shanavia returning it adds some much needed stability to what will likely be a different look Cyclones team. “With a few players retiring after last years Championship, there will be new challenges ahead in 2017, but the goal will be the same. We’re going for three in a row which is a massive achievement in any sport”.
Coach Chris Muggeridge is elated that Shanavia sought to return to the Cyclones as they seek a third straight championship. “Shanavia is such a quality player for our team as she controls play inside and is always an offensive threat. Last season she also showed us what a team leader she can be by mentoring and leading by example for our younger team members.” says Muggeridge.
The QBL season will officially commence in late April with a Grand Final rematch when the Frenchville Sports Club Cyclones take on the Mackay Meteorettes at Hegvold Basketball Stadium.
