With much of the 2015 Championship roster already locked in for the upcoming QBL season, the Frenchville Sports Club Cyclones are thrilled to announce that 2013 league MVP Shanavia Dowdell will be returning to Rockhampton.
Coach Chris Muggeridge is ecstatic about the addition. “Our goal was to bring the full team back so that they could defend their title together” explained coach Muggeridge. “Unfortunately Nicole Michael was unavailable, but to be able to replace her with Shanavia. Honestly, things couldn’t have worked out better”.
Dowdell’s resume is envious, with the star power forward having played in most of the top leagues around the world. The list includes two seasons in the WNBL with the Townsville Fire, a season in France, multiple seasons in Belgium, and two seasons in the WNBA playing with San Antonio and Washington.
Shanavia already boasts an impressive list of individual awards including WNBL All-Star five, QBL All-Star five, and QBL MVP. Although the individual glory is nice, Dowdell says there is only one thing on her mind for 2016. “I followed the girl’s progress really closely last year. I would have loved to have been a part of the Cyclones first championship, but helping them go back to back will just as special”.
Dowdell is not just excited about the prospect of reuniting with her team-mates, but also with the wider Rockhampton community. “I loved my time in Rocky. The people made me feel so welcome” she explained. “What’s not to like? The weather’s great, the fans are the right kind of crazy; it’s just a great place to play”.
Coming off another stellar season in Belgium averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds, there is little doubt about Shanavia’s role within the team. “Shanavia is so strong inside. Her work ethic under the basket is going to be key” says Muggeridge.
“We had one of the best inside presences in the league last season thanks in large to Sam Norwood. Having two dominant post players just makes it that much harder for the opposition” Muggeridge continued.
After a strong display against the Mackay Meteorettes in last Friday’s pre-season hit out, the Cyclones now turn their attention to week 1 of the QBL season and a much anticipated grand final rematch against the Gladstone Power. Like the Cyclones, the Power have also managed to keep much of their team together for season 2016, with some possible upgrades also rumored to be joining the team.
