The McDonald’s Rockhampton Rockets are delighted to announce the signing of 6’9 Forward/Centre David Wagner from the University of British Columbia for the upcoming 2017 QBL season.
Wagner comes to the Rockets after five seasons with the UBC Thunderbirds where he was a proven scorer and rebounder. During his final season Wagner averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds helping his team progress through to the Canadian National Tournament, where the Thunderbirds finished fifth.
“That was a great experience” said Wagner. “Our University hosted the National tournament, so to be in the hunt for a National championship in front your own fans was a real thrill”. It’s one of the things that Wagner is looking forward too when he suits up for the Rockets. “There’s not much better than playing in front of a vocal crowd” he said. “I’ve heard stories about how good the Rockhampton faithful are, so I’m definitely excited to be a part of that”.
Coach Neal Tweedy is looking forward to what the 24 year old can bring to the team. “He’s good size, and most importantly a hard worker. He plays good defense and is safe with the ball”. “Even though he’s relatively young himself, he is going to bring some extra leadership to our young team” said Tweedy.
“That comes with being a part of a successful program, but it’s also a reflection of Dave’s temperament. He’s pretty level headed. He just focuses on going about his business without any fuss” Tweedy said.
Wagner is no stranger to Queensland basketball. He spent the first 10 years of his life in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. It was around this time that the young Australian relocated to Canada, where he would go on to be selected for junior Canadian Cadet teams, culminating in selection to represent Canada at the FIBA junior world championships.
“It’s good to be back in Australia and to get the opportunity to play in a program that has had so much success. My personal goal is to continue to work hard and develop, and give myself every opportunity to keep progressing in the sport”, said Wagner.
The McDonald’s Rockhampton Rockets will kick off their QBL season at Hegvold Stadium in just under two months when they take on the Mackay Meteors on Friday 28th of April.Share
